Frank Beamer may well be one of the best coaches in college football, but the game Monday night against the Broncos of Boise State was not one of his best moments.
With just under two minutes from Virginia Tech was a four-point lead and the ball against a third trial. Boise had to use their waiting time and the last was unable to stop Taylor Tyrode QB run the ball most of the second half.
So what do you do?
Well, Beamer and his staff coach called a pass, which ends up being incomplete. Boise with 1:40 left instead of a little over a minute. Boise would it using a key 15-yard penalty and a late TD pass Kellen Moore.
So why Beamer loses the game for Vatech?
It's simple, Boise offense would have a different approach with one minute instead of 1:40. That's all there is to say about it.
Beamer's call to pass the ball on third down when the opposing team has no timeouts left only says he has no faith in his defense, and based on the final result maybe I would agree with that.
But the main thing is you have to run the ball, especially outside of a bar or run with most of the time, then flat, leaving the Broncos with less than a minute to leave the field.
Beamer can eventually earn a nomination to the hall of the university and even a statue in Blacksburg, but tonight week won contested phrase. In other words, Beamer would go back to what Hokies where possessions are smart and quick, good special teams and solid defense, which have been associated with the majority in Washington DC on night work.
